Ancient Town Berosaba (בְּאֵר שֶׁבַע, بئر السبع)
The ancient city of Be'er Sheva, located in southern Israel, is a significant testament to human settlement over millennia. What makes it special are its mentions in biblical texts and the archaeological remains found on Tell Be'er Sheva, which reveal a rich history.
History+
The earliest traces of human settlement on Tell Be'er Sheva date back to the fourth millennium BCE. From around 1100 BCE, a strongly fortified Israelite city developed here. The Bible mentions Be'er Sheva multiple times, particularly in connection with the patriarchs Abraham and Isaac, with Abraham digging a well and making a covenant with Abimelech. Later, Be'er Sheva marked the southern border of the Israelite settlement area. In subsequent centuries, the city remained inhabited and served as a military post for the Maccabees, Romans, and Byzantines. However, after the Arab conquest in the 7th century CE, the city fell into decline. In 2005, the Tell was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
