History+
The origins of the ancient city of Brijuni date back to the late Republican period, when two villae rusticae laid the foundation. Under Emperor Claudius, it developed into one of the largest villae maritimae on the Adriatic. The complex included a terraced residential building, a small temple district with three temples, a library, cisterns, a bathhouse, and an economic wing for wine and oil production. Later, a dye works was established within the ruins. During the Augustan era, there were seven villae rusticae, a salt pan, and a quarry across the entire archipelago.
