Ancient city Brijuni

The remains of the ancient town can be visited

On the Brijuni Islands in Croatia, remains of an ancient city can be found, which once housed one of the largest Roman villa complexes on the Adriatic.

History+

The origins of the ancient city date back to the late Republican period, when two rural villas laid the foundation. Under Emperor Claudius, this developed into the extensive Villa Maritima in Val Catena Bay, stretching over a kilometer. It included a large residential building with terraces, a temple district with three shrines, a library, cisterns, and a bathing complex. An economic wing for wine and oil production was also part of it. Later, a dye works was established in the ruins. Across the entire archipelago, there were seven other rural villas, a salt pan, and a quarry during the Augustan era.
