Ancient city Byllis

The ancient city of Byllis, a significant Illyrian foundation, is perched on a mountain peak approximately 500 meters high in southern Albania. Once the capital of the Bylliones, its extensive ruins today bear witness to a rich history and offer a fascinating glimpse into the life of an ancient metropolis.
History+
Byllis was founded in the mid-4th century BC as the new capital of the Bylliones, after nearby Nikaia had become too small. Its strategic location allowed control over important trade routes in the Vjosa Valley. After the Illyrians' defeat against Rome in 229 BC, Byllis initially remained an autonomous client state. Later, under the name Colonia Byllidensium, it became part of the Roman province of Macedonia and developed into an important Roman stronghold. In late antiquity, Byllis was an episcopal see and a significant Christian center, evidenced by the numerous early Christian basilicas in the surrounding area. In the 6th century, the city experienced a final flourishing under Emperor Justinian before being destroyed and abandoned in 586 during a Slavic invasion.
