History+

The fortified camp of Castra Albana was founded under Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211) for the Legio II Parthica. It served to secure the emperor and Rome. Originally, the area contained only smaller fortifications, which were demolished for the construction of the camp. The Legio II Parthica, also known as Legio Albana, was established in 197 for the Parthian campaign. Under Emperor Caracalla (211-217), tensions arose with the legion, which he appeased by increasing their pay and constructing the Baths of Caracalla within the camp.
