The ancient city of Colonia Pietas Iulia Pola in Pula, Croatia, has a Roman past. As a center in the Adriatic region, it offers testimonies of Roman architecture.
History+
In 177 BC, Pula fell into Roman hands and became a Roman colony under the name Colonia Pietas Iulia Pola. Under Emperor Augustus, the amphitheater was built, which remains a landmark of the city to this day. From the same era come the Temple of Augustus and Rome, parts of the city wall with its gates, and the remains of two theaters. After the decline of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century, Pula came under the control of the Ostrogoths. In the 6th century, Emperor Justinian conquered the city for the Eastern Roman Empire and developed it into a Byzantine naval base.
