Ancient City Colonia Pietas Iulia Pola-Temple of Augustus

Pula's origins trace back to 177 BC when the Romans conquered the settlement and elevated it to the Roman colony of Colonia Pietas Iulia Pola. The Temple of Augustus, still visible today, was built in the 1st century AD. Under Emperor Augustus, the city was also enriched with an amphitheater, parts of a city wall with gates, and two theaters. After the decline of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century, Pula fell to the Ostrogoths, before being reconquered in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian for the Eastern Roman Empire and developed into an important Byzantine naval base. Although Slavs invaded Istria in the second half of the 6th century, they could not capture coastal cities like Pula, allowing the Roman urban culture to continue undisturbed there. While the Istrian hinterland later became part of the Frankish Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, Pula remained formally Byzantine but operated de facto independently.

The Temple of Augustus is located in Pula, a city in Istria County, belonging to the Jadranska Hrvatska (Adriatic Croatia) region in Croatia, at an elevation of approximately 7 m above sea level.
