History+
Cyme was founded, according to tradition, by Aeolians and Locrians and played a role in the Aeolian League of Eleven Cities. The city was involved in various historical events, including the revolt of Paktyes in 546 BC, the Ionian Revolt in 499 BC, and participation in Xerxes' expedition in 480 BC, when it served as the winter quarters for the Persian fleet. Later, Cyme joined the Delian League in 477 BC, but switched to the Spartan side against Athens in 412 BC. From 400 BC, the city, with some interruptions, was under Persian rule until it came under Greek control again after its conquest by Alexander the Great and his successors. In 218 BC, Cyme joined Attalos I and became Seleucid in 190 BC. Two years later, Rome granted the city tax exemption. In the 1st century BC, Cyme flourished economically and was a suffragan bishopric of Ephesus during the Byzantine era.
