History+

Delphi's origins stretch far back, possibly to an early veneration of the earth goddess Gaia. From the 8th century BCE, the cult of Apollo became established here, and the Oracle of Delphi developed into one of the most important institutions of the ancient world. After a fire in the late 6th century BCE, a new Temple of Apollo was erected, which was later replaced by another new building in the early 4th century BCE. Control over the sanctuary was of great importance and changed hands over the centuries, including through the First Sacred War and the rule of the Aetolian League. Even in Roman times, Delphi remained an important pilgrimage site until pagan cults were forbidden in 392 CE. In the Middle Ages, the village of Kastri emerged over the ruins, whose inhabitants were relocated in 1892 for archaeological excavations.
