Ancient City Erythrai

The remains of the ancient town can be visited

The ancient city of Erythrai, once a center in Ionia, is situated on the Aegean coast of modern-day Turkey near the village of Ildır. This site was an important member of the Ionian League.

Erythrai, later also known as Litri, was an ancient Greek city in Asia Minor. From the 6th to the 4th century BCE, the city was alternately under Persian and Athenian control. During the Hellenistic period, Erythrai's political alignment also changed multiple times. From 133 BCE, after the end of the Pergamene Kingdom, it became a free city within the Roman province of Asia. The Sibyl of Erythrai had her seat here.
