The theater of the ancient city of Halicarnassus, located in modern-day Turkey, stands as a testament to the rich history of this significant settlement. It was once part of a flourishing metropolis that gained renown through its famous Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and as the birthplace of the historian Herodotus.
History+
The origins of Halicarnassus date back to the Bronze Age, with evidence of Mycenaean settlement. From 480 BC, the city was under the rule of Artemisia I, who sided with the Persians in the Greek campaign. In the 5th century BC, Halicarnassus was part of the Delian League. A new era began in 392 BC with the Hecatomnid dynasty. Maussolus, who made Halicarnassus his capital, had a Greek theater and an Ares temple built in addition to military fortifications. After his death, his wife Artemisia II continued the construction of the magnificent Mausoleum. The rule of the Hecatomnids ended in 335 BC, before Halicarnassus was besieged by Alexander the Great in 334 BC as the last Persian stronghold. Later, the city belonged to the Ptolemaic Kingdom and the Roman province of Asia.
