Ancient City Kaunos

The remains of the ancient town can be visited

The ancient city of Kaunos is now in the Köyceğiz River Delta in Turkey, near the modern town of Dalyan. Although originally located directly on the sea, it is now eight kilometers from the open water. Kaunos is famous for its rock-cut tombs and the remains of a once prosperous city.

History+

Kaunos was a significant ancient city in the Caria region of Asia Minor. It was at times a member of the Delian League and later belonged to the mainland possessions of the island of Rhodes. In antiquity, the city was considered wealthy, although its location in the marshy river delta was known to be unhealthy.
