Ancient City Knidos

The remains of the ancient town can be visited

The ancient city of Knidos is situated at the tip of the Datça Peninsula in Turkey. It became known not only for its Hellenistic medical school but also for an Aphrodite sanctuary, which housed the statue of Aphrodite by Praxiteles.

History+

The origins of Knidos date back to Mycenaean times, with finds indicating Minoan and later Mycenaean presence. As a Doric new foundation, the city was a member of the Doric Pentapolis and participated in Sicilian colonization around 580 BC. After a period of Persian rule around 565 BC, Knidos built a treasury in Delphi around 550 BC. The city was part of the Delian League in 477 BC but defected to Sparta in 412 BC before falling under Persian control again.
