Ancient Town Lemba-Lakkous

Between 1976 and 1983, parts of this settlement, dated approximately from 3500 to 2500 BC, were excavated. Across an area of about three hectares, several circular buildings with diameters up to six meters were investigated. Discoveries include stylized figures made from various materials and pottery decorated with red geometric patterns on a white background. Building 1, situated about 100 meters away from the main settlement area, contained a hoard of stone axes and a large limestone figure known as the “Lemba Lady.” The numerous burials north of this building suggest it may have been a cult site for the dead.
