History+

The founding of Magnesia is, according to legend, attributed to the Magnetes from Thessaly, who settled here a generation before the Trojan War. The city experienced periods under Lydian, Persian, and Macedonian rule. After its conquest by Alexander the Great and its affiliation with various Diadochi kingdoms, Magnesia experienced a cultural flourishing in the 2nd century BCE under the rule of the Kingdom of Pergamon. Mentions can be found in ancient historians such as Herodotus and Pausanias. Following a peace treaty with Milet in 196 BCE and liberation by the Romans after 190 BCE, Magnesia was incorporated into the Roman Empire in 133 BCE.
