The ancient town can be visited

The ancient city of Megiddo, also known as Tell el-Mutesellim, is located in northern Israel in the Jezreel Valley. This historic site is famous for its strategic importance along ancient trade routes and as the scene of numerous battles, which also earned it a prominent role in biblical traditions.

History+

The earliest traces of settlement in Megiddo date back to the 4th millennium BC. Due to its favorable location at the pass over the Carmel Mountains, it developed into a strongly fortified city around 3000 BC. In 1457 BC, Pharaoh Thutmose III defeated the Canaanite princes here. After 1000 BC, King David conquered the city, and his son Solomon had a new palace and a citadel built there. Later, Megiddo belonged to the Northern Kingdom of Israel, where King Ahab had the famous stables built. The Assyrians took control in 733 BC, and in 609 BC, a decisive battle took place here, in which King Josiah of Judah fell. Since the Persian period, Megiddo lost its significance. Archaeological excavations, which began in the early 20th century, have uncovered twenty different settlement layers, documenting the long history of the site.
