The ancient city of Metropolis is situated on a hill near Özbey in Turkey's Aegean region. Its history dates back to the early Bronze Age.

History+

Settlement of the site began as early as the third millennium BC, evidenced by finds of pottery fragments and stone axes. The actual founding of the city is presumed around 725 BC, with early finds concentrated on the acropolis. Metropolis experienced its heyday in the Hellenistic period in the third century BC, with extensive urban developments including the construction of city walls, a Temple of Ares, a Stoa, a Bouleuterion, and a theater.
