The remains of the ancient city of Mosynopolis, now found in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace in Northern Greece, were once a center. Originally known as Maximianopolis, it played a role in the Roman province of Rhodope and later in the Byzantine Empire before its destruction in the 13th century.
History+
The existence of the city of Maximianopolis is documented in written sources from the 4th century onwards. Its fortifications were renewed under Emperor Justinian I. In the 11th century, it served as an administrative center and a base for Emperor Basil II in his wars against the Bulgarians. Anna Komnene reports a number of Manichaeans in Mosynopolis in the late 11th and early 12th centuries.
