Ancient City Myus

The ancient city of Myus, located in present-day Western Turkey, was once a settlement and a member of the Ionian League. Its history is marked by its location at the mouth of the Meander River and the challenges this presented.

According to ancient tradition, Myus was founded by Athenians on the site of an earlier Carian settlement, with Kydrelos, a son of the Athenian king Codrus, named as its founder. In 499 BC, the harbor of Myus served as an anchorage for the Persian fleet during the Ionian Revolt. The city participated in the Battle of Lade in 494 BC, though with only three ships. Later, the Persian king Xerxes is said to have handed Myus over to the Athenian general Themistocles. As a member of the Delian League, Myus contributed only small amounts due to the increasing silting of its harbor by the Meander estuary.
