In the heart of the Bulgarian city of Varna lie the impressive remains of the ancient city of Odessos, whose Roman Bath is considered one of the largest and best-preserved of its kind in the Balkans. This monumental structure testifies to the former importance of Roman culture in the region and today offers a fascinating insight into daily life in antiquity.

History+

The Roman Baths of Odessos were constructed at the end of the 2nd century and remained in use until the end of the 3rd century. Covering an area of 7,000 square meters, they are among the largest Roman baths in Europe, surpassed only by the Baths of Caracalla and Diocletian in Rome and the Treveris Baths in Trier. The complex included various areas such as changing rooms, a frigidarium (cold room), tepidarium (warm room), and caldarium (steam bath), as well as a sophisticated heating system with double floors and cavities. The baths were a central hub of social life in Odessos.
