The Ancient City of Oricum, a significant historical site in Albania, is located near the modern town of Orikum in the Vlora district. This ancient settlement, strategically situated on a hill approximately 26 meters above sea level directly by the sea, held great military importance for centuries due to its sheltered harbor.

History+

The earliest archaeological evidence at Oricum dates back to the 6th century BC. The city was repeatedly a scene of military conflicts. In 214 BC, it was conquered by Philip V during the First Roman-Macedonian War. Later, in the Roman Civil War, Gaius Julius Caesar occupied the city in January 48 BC. During the Byzantine era, a small harbor named Jericho existed nearby, which was later renamed Pashaliman during Ottoman times. The exact location of ancient Oricum was identified by Western European researchers as early as the 19th century. In 1926, the Italian archaeologist Luigi M. Ugolini visited the site, and in 1958, a theater was discovered that once accommodated 400 spectators, indicating the modest size of the city at that time.
