Ancient City Pergamon-Theatre
The Ancient City of Pergamon Theatre is an impressive testament to Hellenistic architecture and culture. It is located in modern-day Turkey, near the city of Bergama in the İzmir province, and was once part of the flourishing ancient metropolis of Pergamon, which played a significant role as the capital of the Pergamene Kingdom in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC.
History+
The settlement of Pergamon can be traced back to the Archaic period, with the first literary mentions dating to 400/399 BC, when the March of the Ten Thousand ended here. Under Lysimachus, Philetairos was appointed guardian of the castle, and after Lysimachus' death in 281 BC, he gained independence with a large treasure and founded the Attalid dynasty. Under the Attalids, especially Eumenes I and Attalos I, Pergamon developed into a powerful kingdom and an important cultural center. The city reached its peak in the 2nd century BC and was bequeathed to the Romans by Attalos III in 133 BC. In Roman times, Pergamon initially experienced stagnation, but later underwent extensive redevelopment and was elevated to a metropolis under Hadrian. From the 3rd century AD, decline set in, and in the 7th century, the city fell to the Arabs several times.
