In Bulgaria, on a rock in the eastern Rhodopes, lies the ancient city of Perperikon. This millennia-old site was once a rock sanctuary and later a rock city, inhabited by Thracians, Romans, Goths, Byzantines, and Bulgarians.

The origins of Perperikon date back to the Stone Age, when the site served as a rock sanctuary approximately 8000 years ago. For the Thracians, Perperikon evolved into a rock city, functioning as a capital and fortress with a royal palace. Later, the site was settled by various cultures, including Romans, Goths, Byzantines, and Bulgarians.

Perperikon is located in the Kardzhali district, near the city of Kardzhali. The ancient city is situated at an elevation of approximately 455 meters above sea level.
