Ancient Town Philippopolis-Roman Stadium

The stadium was built in the likeness of the Delphi stadium and is one of the few preserved structures of its kind worldwide. It stretched for approximately 200 meters and, in its heyday, accommodated around 30,000 spectators. Here, the famous Pythian, Alexandrian, and Kendresinian Games were once held. Archaeological excavations have uncovered the eastern part of the stadium as well as sections of the fortress wall dating from the 2nd to 4th centuries. Remains of a hydraulic clock were also discovered at the main entrance. A commemorative plaque reminds visitors that the Olympic Flame made a stop here in 1980 on its way from Athens to Moscow.

The ancient stadium is located in the city of Plovdiv, in the district and region of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. It sits at an elevation of approximately 163 meters above sea level.

Today, the excavated remains of the Roman stadium are accessible to visitors and can be explored. The stadium is integrated into the modern urban landscape, with its entrance situated beneath the main street "Knyaz Alexander I". The area around the stadium is a popular meeting point where local artists display their works.
