History+

Pinara was already an important site in the Lukka lands during the Hittite period. The city experienced its greatest prosperity from the 6th century BCE onwards, playing a central role in the Lycian League. In the 9th century CE, during the Byzantine era, the city was likely destroyed by an earthquake. The rediscovery of this site occurred in 1840 by the British archaeologist Charles Fellows.
