The remains of the ancient town can be visited

Pompeii, an ancient city on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, stands as an extraordinary testament to Roman life, preserved by the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. This former metropolis now offers a unique glimpse into the daily world of antiquity.

History+

Pompeii's history spans approximately seven centuries, shaped by various cultures including the Osci, Samnites, Greeks, Etruscans, and Romans. A severe earthquake in 62 AD already caused significant damage, from which the city had not fully recovered by the final eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The eruption buried Pompeii under a thick layer of ash and pumice, causing the city to be forgotten for over 1500 years. Its rediscovery in the 18th century marked the beginning of a new era of archaeological research, making Pompeii one of the most famous and best-preserved examples of ancient city ruins.
