The remains of the ancient town can be visited

The ancient city of Salona, once the metropolis of the Roman province of Dalmatia, now stands as a ruin site in Solin, Croatia.

History+

Salona was founded in the 4th century BC as a base and port for the Illyrian Dalmatae. In its early days, the city housed not only Illyrians but also Greek settlers and Italics. After the civil war between Caesar and Pompey in 47 BC, Salona gained the status of a Roman colony and developed into the metropolis of the Roman province of Illyricum.
