Ancient City Salona-Amphitheatre

The Amphitheater of the ancient city of Salona, located in Solin in the Split-Dalmatia County, is an impressive testament to Roman architecture on the Adriatic coast of Croatia. As part of the former Roman provincial capital of Dalmatia, it provided entertainment for thousands of spectators and reflects Salona's significance in antiquity.
History+
The ancient city of Salona, originally founded in the 4th century BC as a stronghold of the Illyrian Dalmatae, developed into a Roman colony and metropolis after the civil war between Caesar and Pompey in 47 BC. It experienced its heyday under Emperor Diocletian (284–305), who had his famous palace built nearby. The monumental amphitheater, estimated to have been constructed in the second half of the 2nd century AD and capable of accommodating at least 15,000 spectators, was a central part of public life. Bloody gladiatorial contests and animal hunts took place here, as evidenced by the sanctuaries dedicated to Nemesis found in the substructure. During the Gothic War (535-554), the amphitheater was modified for defense. However, in the 18th century, it was destroyed by the Venetians to prevent the Turks from finding shelter there.
