The remains of the ancient town can be visited

History+

Salona was founded in the 4th century BC as a base and port for the Illyrian Dalmatae. After the civil war between Caesar and Pompey in 47 BC, Salona gained the status of a Roman colony and developed into the metropolis of the province of Illyricum. The city experienced its heyday under Emperor Diocletian (284–305), who had his palace built not far away. During this era, Salona grew significantly and, including its surroundings, housed almost 60,000 inhabitants.
