At the end of the 1st century BC, the Arch of Augustus was built to honor the peace agreement between Emperor Augustus and Marcus Julius Cottius, king of the Cottian Alps. Along with other Roman remains, such as the amphitheater, the arch underscores the central role Susa played during the Roman era.
