Ancient Town Serdica (Sofia (София))-Amphitheatre

The remains of the roman Arena can be visited

The ancient city of Serdica in Sofia harbors the remains of an imposing amphitheater, once among the largest in the Eastern Roman Empire. This historic site, located in today's Bulgarian capital, offers a fascinating glimpse into Roman life and ancient entertainment culture.

History+

The Amphitheater of Serdica was constructed between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, built upon the foundations of an older Roman theater from the 2nd to 3rd centuries, which had been destroyed by the Goths. This earlier theater, possibly built under Emperor Commodus and used under Septimius Severus and Caracalla, fell victim to a Gothic attack in 268 AD. The later amphitheater, built and expanded under Diocletian and Constantine the Great, was in use for less than a century. It was abandoned in the 5th century, possibly due to Theodosius I's reforms against pagan cults. Later, the ruins served as a military camp and refuge. The existence of an amphitheater was suspected as early as 1919, but the actual discovery only occurred in 2004 during construction work for a hotel.

Location+

The ruins of the Amphitheater of the Ancient City of Serdica are located in Sofia, in the Sofia-City district, Bulgaria. The site is situated at an elevation of approximately 548 m above sea level.

Today, visitors can explore the excavated remains of the Roman theater. A portion of the ruins is integrated into the ground floor of a modern hotel and is accessible during the day. There is also a small exhibition of archaeological finds such as coins and pottery.
