History+
During Roman times, Siscia developed into a large and influential city with an estimated 30,000 inhabitants. Its importance is highlighted by the numerous coins minted here between 262 and 383. Siscia was also an important ecclesiastical site, serving as the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese. The first recorded bishop was Quirinus of Siscia, who died as a martyr in 309 and was later canonized.
