History+

Stratonikeia was founded in the 3rd century BC by the Seleucid king Antiochus I and named after his wife Stratonike. Archaeological finds suggest the presence of an earlier Carian settlement. The city experienced a history under the rule of the Seleucids, Rhodians, and Macedonians before being declared a free city by the Romans in 167 BC. Its sphere of influence expanded to include sanctuaries such as that of Hecate in Lagina and Zeus in Panamara.
