The remains of the ancient town can be visited

The theater of the ancient city of Stratonikeia, located in present-day Turkey, is a Seleucid foundation, which later came under changing rule and was eventually declared a free city by the Romans.

History+

The origins of Stratonikeia date back to the early 3rd century BC, when the Seleucid king Antiochus I founded the city and named it after his wife Stratonice. It is presumed that a Carian settlement already existed, as indicated by archaeological finds such as grave goods and pottery. Sovereignty over Stratonikeia changed hands multiple times between Seleucids, Rhodians, and Macedonians. In 167 BC, the Romans declared the city a free city.
