Ancient City Tabai

Tabai (Greek: Τάβαι) was an ancient city in the Anatolian region of Caria, on the border with Phrygia and Pisidia. It was located near modern-day Kale in the Turkish province of Denizli.

North of Tabai, which was situated on a hill, stretched a plain named after the city, where there were other small settlements. The French epigrapher Louis Robert researched inscriptions and historical geography of the area in his Corpus La Carie II.

In Roman times (from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD), Tabai minted its own coins. In late antiquity, it was the seat of a bishop. The diocese is the origin of the titular see of Tabae of the Roman Catholic Church.
