History+
The Theatre of Teos was built in the 2nd century BC and was a central component of urban life. The city of Teos itself has a long history. In 545 BC, the Thracian coastal city of Abdera was resettled from here. Teos was a member of the Ionian League and participated in the revolt against Persian rule in 499 BC, which led to the Persian Wars. After the naval battle of Notion in the Peloponnesian War, Teos fell to Sparta in 407/406 BC but was lost again after the Battle of Cnidus in 394 BC. Through the King's Peace of 387/386 BC, Teos once again became part of the Persian Empire until Alexander the Great ended Persian dominance. In the 3rd century BC, the Macedonian king Antigonus I attempted to unite Teos with the neighboring city of Lebedos, but this failed. Later, the Seleucids and, from 229 BC, the rulers of Pergamon exerted influence over the city.
