Ancient City Thasos (Θάσος)-Acropolis

The Acropolis of the ancient city of Thasos, located on the island of the same name in Northern Greece, bears witness to a rich history and impressive architectural achievements. As the heart of the once flourishing island metropolis, it offered strategic protection and housed important sanctuaries, whose remains still testify to its former grandeur.
History+
The area of the later city of Thasos was already settled in pre-colonial times, with archaeological traces dating back to the 8th century BC. The actual founding of the island state of Thasos occurred around 680 BC by colonists from Paros. The city gained great importance in the Greek world from the 6th century BC onwards. In the 7th century BC, important cult districts such as the Herakleion, the Artemision, the Pythion, and the Athenaion were established on the Acropolis. These sanctuaries served as fixed points for urban planning. In the 6th century BC, the cult sites were expanded, and new residential areas and the Agora were developed. A significant construction phase was the erection of the city wall from the 5th century BC, which was over 4 km long and equipped with numerous towers and eleven gates, some of which were adorned with reliefs of gods and heroes. Despite repeated destructions and reconstructions, particularly due to Persian and Athenian orders, parts of the visible walls today date from this period. In the 7th century AD, the city was finally destroyed and abandoned.
