Ancient City Tibur-Tempio di Vesta

The remains of the ancient town can be visited

The Temple of Vesta in Tivoli stands on the acropolis of the ancient city of Tibur. This ruin, situated above the Aniene waterfalls, is an example of the architectural sophistication of the early Roman Imperial period.

History+

Dating back to the early 1st century BC, this circular temple of Corinthian order has an uncertain dedication – possible deities include Hercules, the Tiburtine Sibyl Albunea, the city founder Tiburnus, or Vesta herself. However, an inscription on the architrave identifies Lucius Gellius as its builder or restorer.
