Ancient City Tlos

The remains of the ancient town can be visited

The ancient city of Tlos, once a center in Lycia, is on a rocky plateau in the Xanthos Valley in southwestern Turkey. Its well-preserved remains date back to the Bronze Age.

History+

The settlement of Tlos can be traced back to the Bronze Age, with a possible identification with Tlawa or Dalawa mentioned in Hittite texts. Within the Lycian League, Tlos was one of the six most important cities. Although it served as an episcopal see during the Byzantine era, the city gradually lost its influence. A late episode in the 19th century saw the construction of a winter residence and barracks on the ancient acropolis ruins by Kanlı Ali Ağa, known as a brigand.

Location+

Tlos is located near the village of Düğer in the Muğla province, within the Aegean region of Turkey. The site is situated at an elevation of approx. 468 meters above sea level.
