The ancient city of Tralleis, once a center in Caria, is located two kilometers north of modern Aydın in Turkey. Its history is marked by changing rulers and cultural development, reflected in its remains.

History+

According to Strabo, the founding of Tralleis is attributed to the Argives and Thracians. In 313 BC, the city fell to Antigonus before coming under Seleucid control and being named Seleucia. Antiochus III granted it special privileges as a polis in the late 3rd century BC. Following the Peace of Apamea in 188 BC, Tralleis was assigned to the Attalids of Pergamon and served as the site of a sanctuary of Zeus Larasios. After the decline of the Pergamene kingdom, the city became Roman.
