Ancient City Troy (Ilion)

The history of Troy dates back to the 5th millennium BCE, with the first traces of settlement. The city experienced numerous periods of construction and destruction, leading to the layers visible today. In the 8th century BCE, the Greek poet Homer described the city of Ilios, which was later identified with the real Troy. After a long period of oblivion, the location of Troy was debated again starting in the 18th century. In the 19th century, excavations by Heinrich Schliemann on the Hisarlık hill unearthed numerous settlement layers from the 5th millennium BCE to the 5th century CE. The identification of Homeric Troy with the settlements on Hisarlık is now the prevailing academic view in ancient studies, with specific layers being linked to Homer's descriptions.

The ancient city of Troy is located in Tevfikiye, a district of Çanakkale in the Marmara region of Turkey. It stands on a hill, approximately 30 meters above sea level.
