Ancient Temple of Poseidon

The Ancient Temple of Poseidon majestically crowns a promontory in Sounio, Attica, Greece. This impressive ruin of a marble temple, dedicated to the sea god Poseidon, is an outstanding example of ancient Greek architecture and offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea.
History+
The history of the site dates back a long time, with Homer already referring to Cape Sounion as sacred. Sanctuaries were present here as early as the 7th century BC. Around 490 BC, an unfinished tuff temple was destroyed by the Persians. The visible Doric peripteros was erected around 440 BC, presumably based on plans by the architect Kallikrates. During the Peloponnesian War, the complex was fortified to secure the sea route to Athens. The German Archaeological Institute conducted the first scientific excavations in 1884.
