Arco di Settimio Severo (Arch of Septimius Severus)

The remains of the ancient town can be visited

In the Roman Forum in Rome stands the Arch of Septimius Severus, a triple-arched triumphal arch. This structure was erected in honor of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus and his sons.

History+

The decision to build the arch was made after the first Parthian War, but its construction took place in 203 AD, following the victory over Clodius Albinus and the second Parthian campaign (197–199 AD). The arch was intended to immortalize the triumphs of Emperor Septimius Severus and his sons Caracalla and Geta over the Parthians. Originally, an inscription on the attic bore the names of all three, but after Geta's assassination in 211 AD and his subsequent damnatio memoriae, his name was erased and replaced with additional honorary titles for Septimius Severus and Caracalla. The arch is an example of Severan architecture and was the largest triumphal arch in the Roman Forum at the time of its completion.
