Armadale Castle

The history of Armadale Castle begins in 1650, when Clan MacDonald settled in Armadale and inhabited two farmhouses there. At the end of the 17th century, around 1690, they moved their main residence to Duntulm Castle. It was not until 1790 that the clan returned to Armadale and had a new mansion built. This structure was expanded in 1815 in a historicist style according to plans by James Gillespie Graham, but was largely destroyed by a devastating fire in 1855. After the destruction, parts of the ruin were replaced by a new building by David Bryce. In 1925, the clan finally abandoned Armadale, and the complex increasingly fell into disrepair. In the 1970s, the north wing of the original 1790 building was restored after the Clan Donald Lands Trust acquired the estate.
