In Ankum, Lower Saxony, stands the Roman Catholic parish church St. Nikolaus, popularly known as the Artländer Dom. Its appearance shapes the cityscape of the old market town.

History+

The first mention of a church in Ankum dates back to 1169. It is believed that the origins of the parish date back to the Saxon era, possibly as a baptismal church under Charlemagne. An initial wooden church was replaced by a stone structure in the 11th century, which developed into a three-aisled basilica in the 12th and 13th centuries. This complex, once surrounded by a fortified churchyard, underwent expansions.
