In West Sussex, England, Arundel Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Great Britain. Originally designed as a defensive structure, it shows a long history and architectural evolution.

History+

The origins of Arundel Castle date back to the 11th century when it was built as a motte-and-bailey castle during the era of Edward the Confessor. The complex was completed under Roger de Montgomerie, the 1st Earl of Shrewsbury. Its primary function was to protect the river mouth from invaders. The original motte evolved into a castle, which was rebuilt and expanded multiple times. With brief interruptions by the Crown, it served as the ancestral seat of various noble families.
