Augsburg Cathedral

The earliest verifiable cathedral constructions in Augsburg were undertaken by Bishops Wikterp and Simpert, with Simpert's church consecrated in 805. The first documented mention of the Marian Cathedral dates to 822. Following damage from Hungarian incursions, Bishop Ulrich initiated repairs from 923. A collapse of the western structure in 994 led to a new beginning under Bishop Liutold, who, with the support of Empress Adelheid, commenced construction of the current core, including the western choir and northern transept. This construction was completed around 1006 with the nave and still forms the central part of the cathedral today. Further alterations took place under Bishop Heinrich II and his successor Embriko, who consecrated a main altar in the western choir in 1065. Around 1178, the entire transept and nave roof structure was renewed. From 1331, the Romanesque cathedral was expanded in Gothic forms, receiving double side aisles and pointed ribbed vaults in the nave. Bishop Marquard I von Randeck laid the foundation stone for the imposing eastern choir in 1356, which was not completed until 1431 and has a complex building history, originally envisioning a design in the style of Cologne Cathedral.

The cathedral is situated in the city of Augsburg, a historic city in the region of Bavaria, Germany. It lies within the former Roman provincial capital of Augusta Vindelicum.

Today, Augsburg Cathedral serves as the cathedral of the Diocese of Augsburg and as a city parish church. It is protected as a historical monument in Bavaria and is considered one of the most visited attractions in the city.
