The Augustinian Canonesses' Abbey of Fraulautern, a historic monastery, is located in Saarlouis in Saarland. The complex, with its origins in the 12th century, was once a significant Augustinian convent for noblewomen and shaped the region for centuries.

History+

The written mention of the place Fraulautern, then known as “Lutrea Wilre,” can be traced back to the 10th century. A document from the Trier Archbishop Ruotbertus from this period already speaks of a parish church. The current name of the place is derived from the nuns residing here and the Celtic word “Lutra” for “swampy stream.” The monastery was founded in 1129 when the nobleman Adalbert transferred his possessions in Fraulautern to the Trier Archbishop Meginher von Falmagne. Legend has it that Adalbert made the donation as a vow after the loss of his son. Initially, a chapel was built at the confluence of the Fraulauterner Bach and the Saar, but the monastery's location was later moved to an elevated position. After initial difficulties with the occupation by monks from Mettlach and Springiersbach, the abbey was occupied by Augustinian nuns around 1160. This noblewomen's convent existed until its dissolution during the French Revolution.
