Kloster Marienberg

The convent of the Regular Canonesses of the Windesheim Congregation was founded in 1439 by Adelheid vom Stade, a citizen of Neuss. By 1462, the associated monastery church, a simple brick hall building with a cross-ribbed vault, was consecrated. The name Marienberg is documented since 1464. The nuns dedicated themselves to choral service and scripture reading, supported by an extensive library that was lost during secularization. In the 16th century, deficiencies in monastic discipline were noted during a visitation in 1569. The monastery was repeatedly affected by wartime events: in 1585, during the Cologne War, soldiers entered Neuss over the monastery wall, and a year later, the complex was partially burned down by Spanish troops. The monastery also suffered during the Thirty Years' War, having to yield to a Protestant preacher in 1643 and taking in nuns from the destroyed Holzheim monastery in 1651, which led to expansion constructions. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1802, and the church was handed over to the Protestant community of Neuss as a parish church. Since 1857, Marienberg has again been used as a monastery, this time by the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus, who also took over the church in 1911. The church, destroyed in World War II, was rebuilt in the 1950s and extensively renovated in the late 1990s.

The Augustinian Canonesses' Convent of Marienberg is located in the city of Neuss, within the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district, a region in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Today, the Church of St. Mary's Nativity serves as a monastery church, a school church for the archiepiscopal girls' grammar school and the Marienberg vocational college, and a place of worship for the Italian Roman Catholic community of Neuss. The monastery continues to be an active convent of the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus.
