The convent's foundation dates back to 1485. It was inhabited by the Augustinian Canonesses B.M.V., an order dedicated to the veneration of the Virgin Mary and leading a contemplative life. The sisters lived according to the Rule of Saint Augustine and shaped the spiritual and cultural life in Salzwedel and the surrounding Altmark region.
